One of the consequences of Renee being in hospital was I spent a lot of time in Savannah Georgia. Whilst most of it was at the hospital with her, I did get the opportunity to get out and explore this beautiful city too.
Savannah is an amazing place, steeped in rich history and heritage, with amazing architecture and stories on every corner. Many movies have featured it, including the Iconic Forrest Gump, where the famous park bench scenes were filmed in Chipewa Square. FunFact: the bench was actually installed by the movie company to be able to correctly frame the shots for the movie.
The location has become a pilgrimage spot for lovers of the movie and after several attempts to ‘liberate’ the bench by movie buffs, it was eventually removed and is now housed in the Savannah History Museum.
Although on the east coast, Savannah never really took off as a major Sea port, that was left to coastal locations above and below. The city has a strong pedigree in medicine and still hosts a huge hospital complex, featuring several specialist teaching hospitals covering all areas of medicine. This was why Renee was brought there, they are the best in what they do, even though, sadly, it wasn’t enough to save her.
Savannah also has a big history featuring strong women and women’s rights, going back into the late 1800’s, including Lucy Barrow McIntyre who was a prominent suffragist, preservationist and activist of the time. A number of the beautiful historic buildings in savannah still exist because of her tenaciousness in ensuring Savannah’s history wasn't erased by high rises and concrete monstrosities.
The city also, curiously, hosts the second largest St Patricks Day celebrations in the whole of the US, with a huge parade each year. Perhaps one year I will be back there to experience it.
All in all, Savannah is a lovely city, that feels safe, warm and welcoming and is well worth a visit if you ever have the opportunity. The circumstances in how I got to know the city were not great, as my already published earlier blog explained but I feel the city did its best to keep me sane and safe with its warm ambience and relaxed nature.
I hope you enjoy the photo’s and footage below. If you ever have the chance, I highly recommend you take a visit here.
